Country Gardens Royston

Country Gardens Royston, is a garden centre that is confusingly not that close to Royston.

As Garden centres go, it has all of the things that you would expect, including a pretty large restaurant.  This visit was our second, the first one being marred by the manager (a very officious woman) walking over to our table and telling us that we had taken too many napkins (we had six and one per person was the limit…).  She actually took two back!!!  With two toddlers, we just left the carnage rather than clear up ourselves as we usually would.

But moving on, we like to give everything a second chance.  The reason for us going to Country Gardens was really to have breakfast and make use of the excellent ‘soft play’ area for the children, and have five minutes of peace and quiet.

We ordered coffee, and a couple of Full English breakfasts and sat in relative peace, whilst the children threw themselves down the slides in the soft play area.  The restaurant area is large, airy and bright – all in all pretty relaxing.

Coffee was pretty reasonable and our Full English breakfasts were crackers.  Much better than our previous visit.  Sausages flavoursome and had good texture. All of the ingredients were high quality and perfectly cooked.  Beans seemed to taste like Heinz ones and the tomato was very very tasty and cooked just right.

Generally I don’t like hash browns that much, but the one I had was pretty damn good.

If you have children you need to relieve of a load of energy, you could do worse than go to Country Gardens, have a wander round and then enjoy a hearty and well cooked breakfast.

(Note: We did not see the napkin counting manager again)

Cambridge Hot Dog Company

Now this isn’t strictly Breakfast, but I can assure you, good reader that the morning after a couple of bottles of Claret (or whatever you favourite ‘tincture’ is) this really hits the spot if you don’t have time to sit down and eat.

Essentially there are three locations where very clean well organised stands operate.  They sell what they call Hotdogs, which I suppose they are.  But please do not mistake them with the American variety which in my limited experience are pretty vile.

There are always some special sausages as well as plain ones.  On this occasion I opted for an ‘Extra Large’ with Chilli, Onion and Cheese.  Very much a near perfect antidote to what was a slightly unpleasant hangover.

Great texture, fast, instantly gratifying and good value ar just over £3.  Not strictly a breakfast but excellent value for money.  The best bit is that I can fit one in whilst Mrs CBR is doing shopping for the children and I am doing the banking.

It’s probably not the healthiest breakfast I have had, and my special friend “B” particulary frowns on this type of food – fatty meat and white bread.  But in my book it is a winner – grab one!

Agora at the Copper Kettle – Cambridge

So it has been a little while since I have had time to update the CBR – apologies to all for the delay in posting an update!  I have to blame too much time spent at work – especially weekends for the lack of updates.

And so to the Copper Kettle….   I have lived around Cambridge for about 30 years and I always remember the Copper Kettle (situated opposite Kings College) being full of people, steamed up windows and looking inviting from the cold of the winter.

Until the CBR, I had not ever eaten there so did not know what to expect.  Smartly presented from the outside, I had high hopes of a good breakfast with a fine view.

The menu was pretty standard fare but did include some more interesting choices – natural yoghurt and notably the “A la Turca Platter”.

Keen to try new things, I ordered the pretty healthy “A la Turca Platter” for the Children and a Full English for myself.

Whilst we had arrived early, the Copper Kettle was relatively busy and the staff friendly.  Mrs CBR and I were a little put off by the flower in a bottle on the table – the water was green….as can be seen below.

But on to the breakfasts!

The childrens breakfast came first and was a little dissapointing.  It was everything that the menu said it would be, but somehow thats all it was – the stated items assembled on a plate.  In all it was OK but individually none of the component parts stood out as special, and nothing really bound it together as a dish.

My Full English was definitely not that warm on arrival, particularly the beans which were definitely cool.  The sausages were pretty textureless and relatively low end.  The toast was amongs the thinnest I have ever had with no room to be fluffy on the inside.  The coffee was also not great.

Overall this was a dissapointment for an establishment opposite one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.  The best part of eating at the Copper Kettle (for me) was the view of Kings College.

Bill’s – Cambridge

Bill’s is a new place situated in the heart of Cambridge.  Mrs CBR saw it on one of her shopping trips (this time to buy yet another type of push chair).

Bill’s is located on Green Street – a pretty charming street, slightly out of the hussle and bustle of the main tourist parts of Cambridge.

It is one of the flasher places you could eat in Cambridge and like lots of places, it has an extensive menu covering Breakfast Lunch and dinner.  It is styled as a restaurant / deli with stacks of produce and things to buy.

So onto the Breakfast.  Firstly, the service was great – we were greeted by an Aussie, the children immediately given some biscuits to keep them quiet and high chairs were provided without asking.

I ordered a simple black coffee and OJ both of which were great – cafetieres are also available.  Mrs CBR only drinks Iced Coffee, which usually presents a challenge as places dont usually have it on the menu.  This was the case at Bill’s but one was russled up and passed muster, which is important if I am not subsequently forced to visit Starbucks for a ‘real’ iced coffee.

So onto the breakfast!  The menu is relatively compact, but has everything I would want – I opted for Bill’s Breakfast at £7.95, Mrs CBR for Eggs Benedict at £6.95.  There is a childrens menu – they had toast.

Both of our breakfasts were fantastic and the best we have eaten in a long time. Bill’s Breakfast was beautifully presented, with top quality ingredients.  The sausages high quality, and the tomato perfectly cooked.  My toast was laced with olive oil rather than butter, which further contributed to a very very special breakfast.

I always find it difficult to judge the size of a breakfast from a picture, but this nearly defeated me not somthing that happens all that often….

The Eggs Benedict were according to Mrs CBR the best she has ever had.

Note: the Sausage came as an added extra. (The second bottle of Malbec the night before no doubt was the deciding factor in adding somthing extra to this dish!)

So there you have it.  The best breakfast we have had in a long time, in a very interesting location.  This is definitely the type of place you can sit back, relax and read the paper, and excellent if you like a ‘higher end’ gourmet breakfast.

Mrs CBR wanted to go back next Saturday, and was crestfallen when I explained that we had to sample another establishment for the sake of this blog and you, the reader.

Lazy Days Cafe – Wimpole

The Lazy Days Cafe is situated between Arrington and Wimpole on the A603.  It has been there for many years often frequented by the police, lorry drivers and tradesmen.

Lazy Dayz Cafe

Lazy Dayz Cafe

I had occasion to visit for a breakfast meeting with my builder about six years ago and was very pleasantly surprised by the range and value of the breakfasts available.  So it made sense to visit again for the purposes of the first review for this Blog.

Lazy Dayz is the sort of place you drive to – there is not much else around in the immediate vicinity.  The car park is large and has quite a few pot holes – so watch out if you are driving a flash car!

Lazy Days Cafe

Lazy Days Cafe

Lazy Dayz offeres a very comprehensive range of breakfasts lots of set options as well as some specials like pancakes. In addition to Breakfasts there is a wide variety of lunches.  But thats not why we were there!

I opted for the Big Breakfast at £5.10 with a side of toast.  The toast was perfect – thick, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.  The Big Breakfast was generously sized and well cooked. Egg yolks nice and yellow, bread very fresh and the bacon cooked beautifully.  The only slight disappointment was the sausage, which was quite “processed”.

Mrs CBR chose the pancakes (far too much time spent living abroad!).  They were well recieved and served with tons of maple syrup and a topping of icing sugar.  Rascal and Rascaletta partook in the pancakes depite being bought brown toast – they loved them.

Service is good – very friendly and helpful staff, and for those of us with children, there are clean high chairs.

This is definitely a workers “caf” where you get an honest breakfast for a good price.  It is definitely not flash but a good place to go if you have a hangover or for brekkie with your builder, or even your family!

Its worth noting that a quick Google reveals that Lazy Dayz has a Food Hygiene Rating of 4 star.
